Event description

Tuesday 20 October – Women

10am – The Working Women of Christchurch
Alison Rogers and Joanna Church, Christchurch City Libraries

For much of the first half of the twentieth century, women’s occupations were omitted from electoral rolls and replaced by their marital status. Yet Canterbury was full of working women—from nurses and shopkeepers to artists, politicians, inventors, pork butchers and magicians’ assistants.

Hear how Tūranga librarians used photographs and historical records to uncover their working lives.

11am – Ettie Rout: Health Pioneer
Xanthe Rose, University of Canterbury

Discover the story of New Zealand sexual-health pioneer Ettie Rout. Her work protected soldiers during the First World War but was largely silenced in her own country. Learn how her reputation has changed and how she is remembered today.
